Platform names Munir Patel to lead natural resources practice

Calgary-based executive brings decades of energy sector leadership to expand insurance and risk advisory services for clients across Canada’s resource industries, including major construction projects.

Platform Insurance Management Inc. recently appointed Munir Patel as Managing Director and Head of its Natural Resources practice, strengthening its leadership team as the firm looks to expand its presence across Canada’s energy, mining and utilities sectors. Based in Calgary, Patel will lead the strategic growth of the practice, with a focus on supporting clients involved in resource development projects that span exploration, construction, production, transportation and eventual decommissioning. His appointment comes as owners, contractors and project partners continue to face increasingly complex risk management challenges on major industrial developments.

Before joining Platform, Patel spent nearly a decade as a partner with Deloitte, where he led engagements for energy, resources and industrial clients across Canada. Earlier in his career, he held senior leadership roles at Suncor, overseeing operations, enterprise risk, internal audit, commercial functions and major growth initiatives. Platform says Patel’s combination of operational experience and executive leadership will strengthen its ability to advise clients navigating large-scale capital projects and evolving risk environments.

“Munir brings a unique combination of executive leadership experience, industry knowledge and longstanding relationships throughout the sectors we serve,” said Rajeev Sakhuja, President of Platform, adding that Patel’s experience will help deepen client relationships while supporting the firm’s continued expansion in the natural resources market.

Focus on risk management for major projects

Platform’s Natural Resources practice provides insurance brokerage, risk management claims advocacy and advisory services to organizations across the full lifecycle of resource projects. For Canadian general contractors working on energy, mining and utility developments, those services increasingly extend beyond traditional insurance placement to include strategic risk planning and claims support throughout construction and operations.

Patel, who officially joined Platform on June 23, said Canada’s natural resources sector remains central to the country’s economic competitiveness and that Platforms emphasis on industry expertise, collaborative culture and practical risk solutions made the opportunity particularly attractive as the firm continues building its speciality commercial brokerage business nationwide.
