While I’ve found a few life-changing cleaning hacks on TikTok, like “putting your house to bed every night” or using a pillowcase to trap dust when cleaning fan blades, I’ve also seen some bad, and even possibly dangerous tips. Mopping the floors with dishwasher tabs and mixing a copious amount of cleaning products are just a couple that come to mind. So, it’s safe to say that I’m cautiously optimistic when I see a cleaning product go viral on TikTok. Recently, I noticed that the Zep Foaming Wall Cleaner was one such product showcased as a miracle-worker in more than a few videos. So, I decided to put it to the test.

The Zep Foaming Wall Cleaner comes in a spray can and emits a light mist of clinging foam, making it easy to target dirty spots on the wall. According to the back of the can, it works on walls, washable wallpaper, ceilings, woodwork, painted surfaces, and vinyl coverings. It’s intended to be a no-scrub, professional-grade wall cleaner – just spray it on and immediately wipe it off.
Since I have many common paint finishes in my home (flat, eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss), plus washable wallpaper, and more than a few crayon, makeup, and scuff marks from my kids, I knew that I was in the perfect position to give this product a thorough testing.
I decided to try it on the glossier paint finishes in my home first, as these are generally the easiest to clean. My first test? A particularly dirty baseboard in my kitchen that butts up to the cabinets and always has a layer of dirt embedded in its corner. I blasted it with the spray, and after a quick wipe with a towel, all of the dirt was removed, no scrubbing needed.
I then moved on to my white walls marred with scuffs from kitchen chairs. While the Zep wall cleaner removed the scuffs, four applications were required, but I didn’t have to scrub, and the process was quick. I also used the spray to clean large sections of the satin walls, and they looked freshly painted afterward. That’s a win in my book.
I was most interested in whether this cleaner would work on matte walls, since cleaning flat-painted walls is pretty tricky, and some products can cause noticeable damage. The good news? It didn’t negatively affect the flat wall paint coating in my bedroom and left the walls looking much cleaner. However, it didn’t work as well on scuff marks compared to its effectiveness on glossier paint surfaces. It lightened the scuff marks, but didn’t completely remove them, even after applying several coats.
Overall, I wouldn’t label the Zep foaming wall cleaner a “miracle worker,” but I do think it’s worthy of keeping on hand, especially for deep cleaning sessions. It worked on my wallpaper and all paint finishes I tried it on, removed a slew of different dirt and markings on my walls, and was easy to use.
